Each building’s health suite is open from 8:00 am – 3:30 pm. Please speak to the school nurse in regards to all illnesses and/or injuries your child may have. The district will do its best to ensure students reach an optimal level of health, so that they may receive the maximum benefit from their educational experiences.

Dress for the weather

  • Mornings at the bus stop are often cold while later on in the day it can be quite warm at recess. Dressing in layers will enable your child to be warm and comfortable with the changing weather throughout the fall season.

Stay Healthy During Cold/Flu Season

  • Wash your hands frequently.
  • Cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing.
  • Be sure to get a good night’s sleep and eat healthy foods.
  • If your child becomes ill keep them at home to avoid getting others sick.
  • Your child should be fever free for 24 hours prior to returning to school without the use of fever reducing medicine. Note anything over 100 degrees is considered a fever.
  • Discuss with your physician about getting your child the flu shot.

  • Please be sure your emergency contacts and phone number are updated and on file in the nurse office in case your child becomes ill or is injured at school.

All students are required to have a physical examination upon entry into school for kindergarten, in 6th grade and in 11th grade. All students are required to have a dental examination upon entry into school for kindergarten, in 3rd grade and in 7th grade. School physical and dental examinations are offered in the Spring each school year. It is preferred that your family physician and dentist completes this examination. Forms are available in the office or on the school website.

Screenings are conducted by the Tuscarora Intermediate Unit in the Fall of each school year. If your child fails the screening, they will be retested by the school nurse. If they fail the secondary screening, a referral will be sent home, and further evaluation by their primary care physician or eye doctor will be required. The referral must be returned to the school nurse. If your child is prescribed glasses or a hearing device they should be worn to school every day.

Pennsylvania School Health Code requires the recording of height, weight and body mass index for each school year. These results are available to view on the parent access site in Skyward. If you prefer a paper copy please let your school nurse know.

  • 4 doses of tetanus, diphtheria and acellular pertussis * (1 dose on or after 4th birthday)
  • 4 doses of polio (4th dose on or after 4th birthday and at least 6 months after previous dose)
  • 2 doses of measles, mumps and rubella**
  • 3 doses of hepatitis B
  • 2 doses of varicella (chickenpox or evidence of immunity)
  • * Usually given as DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis) or DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis combination vaccine) or DT (Diphtheria-Tetanus) or TD (Tetanus and Diphtheria)
  • ** Usually given as MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella combination vaccine)

When To Keep Your Child Home

  • Temperature of 100 Degrees or Higher. Temperature should be normal without medication for 24 hours before returning to class.
  • Vomiting and Diarrhea
  • Persistent Cough or Thick Nasal Discharge
  • Eyes: Red, Itchy, or with a Discharge
  • Earache
  • Persistent Itching of the Scalp: If you suspect your child may have head lice, call your school’s nurse to have your child checked before he/she goes to the classroom. If positive for head lice, the child must be cleared by the school nurse before riding the bus or reentering school.
  • Rash: Persistent Itching over the body

Your child should remain at home until these symptoms are resolved or medically treated.
